Neat Title Design/Effect in Indy Trailer

I can’t imagine this was just an accident (what’s left to chance with marketing Indiana Jones?) — in one of the tv spots for the movie, I like how the title pulls out on "A" in such a way that you get a hint of a "4" (as in the fourth in the series) at the same time.

Japanese Pen Spinning

Monday, March 31st, 2008

According to asahi.com, a new pen spinning champion has been crowned:

“I was nervous. I did not think that I could win,” said Ryuki Omura, 16, who started learning pen spinning only 14 months ago.

Gucha Gucha

Japanese has several onomatopoeic expressions, often the same sound repeated, and often to describe sounds and feelings. Gucha-gucha is a favorite, which you can use to describe something messed up and out of order in a tangled, sticky ugly sort of way. When you wake up after a hard night of boozing, for example, your hair and state of being might be called gucha-gucha. Like this:

gucha gucha

Just looking at its box, you might be tempted to think Game Party is just another piece of crapware for the Wii. You would be 95% wrong. It ain’t great, and it won’t win any awards for Graphic Excellence, and occasionally the controls are baffling, but it does manage to be fun. And Scott, I think all the games are one-handed.

Whew.

There is nothing quite as big a relief as a doctor saying your kid is
doing great, no problems.

“I suppose, in a way, we invented MTV.”

My friend Michael made possibly the most sobering observation of my life up to that time when, as we were talking about the Beatles, he pointed out that they had written some of the world’s best known, most beloved pop songs all by the time they were 30.

You see what happens, Larry?
